IT IS THE RIGHT TIME to report about a new joke from the NAFTI KIDZ..

Before I start to report more about the film industry in Ghana, experience of shootings here, ideas/ plans and projects I want to show you what we did at NAFTI not long ago..

In short: One day – One Film!

Our task: “Shoot and edit a film in one day about the topic envy or greed.
The location must be around the the university compound”

Because of the category “directing” which I study at NAFTI, we were supposed to write screenplays for this task. Out of all the screenplays we chose five. “WHAT YOU DESERVE” is my short story and together with nearly all departments of NAFTI (directing, camera, sound and art direction) we made it possible and finished editing the film on time to show it on the next morning in the “NAFTI Film theater” at the NAFTI Hostel.

Together with Emanuel, who had the task of directing the shooting of my screenplay, we planned how best we can shoot it. For the location we chose the unfinished NAFTI building.

This building was supposed to be the new university complex for NAFTI. What you see in the film was built already many years ago and that’s why the students simply call it “the monster” today. After an election, the new government decided to cancel the budget for the building – film was seen as a luxury which is not necessary. Just this year there is a change of thinking in the government – when I consider what the Minister for Information told me at a press conference at NAFTI.

About this, I will go more into detail in another article at my blog in future time.

Now back to the film. To answer the first question for some filmmakers..

GHANA and GERMANY – united filmmaking

Together with my NAFTI classmates from the “Level 300 directing class (=5th semester)” and the “camera class”, “sound class” and “art directing class”. We experienced a two week “cinematography and acting workshop” from Professor Axel Block (Wiki / IMDb) from the film university in Munich (Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen München) and Professor Peter Bringmann (Wiki / IMDb) from the media university in Cologne (Kunsthoschule für Medien Köln) at NAFTI.
This exchange project was possible because the university in Cologne (under the umbrella of Prof. Bringmann) established a collaboration with NAFTI in 2010 which will help NAFTI to grow and get better equipment while students from Cologne can study in Ghana and in future even the other way round.

It`s funny. KHM and Mr. Bringmann were faster!
In 2009, when I thought about the plan to study at NAFTI one day I was also thinking about creating a collaboration between my university in Germany where I study film (or also called “video” ) and NAFTI. However, in 2011 when I talked to some of the lecturers at NAFTI which are my friends since I visited them at NAFTI with the film workshop group from Komenda, they told me that KHM had just started a collaboration with them.
So I just decided that I will try it on my own to attend NAFTI.
And that’s the beginning of the story.. With the help of two scholarships I finally managed after more than half a year of burocracy, tests and millions of emails to come here to go deeper into the word of cinematic arts… (big thanks to DAAD & HBS!)

THE SWEET LITTLE THING:

Hey friends! Guess I`m a bit late to start this Blog because I’m already more than 6 month in Ghana however all the time through I was so busy with university that even eating was a waste of time. Now I’M BACK in the world of the web and start with my “WuzzupGH – Filmmaking in Ghana” Blog.

So….why is Tom in Ghana again? I stopped my film study in Germany for an exchange programm which I really loved to expear. From August 2011 until February 2012 I study at the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) in Ghana to border my horizon and become a pan afirican filmmaker.

Parallel I continue to work on different projects (music & film) I started when I came to Ghana from 2009 to 2010. The filmworkshop I started for the ghanaian youth in Komenda (central region) in 2009 is still running and they get now trained by two new volunteers.

So stay tuned…this Blog will make it able to follow the process. Welcome to my world, welcome to Africa.

The term ‘intellectual genocide’ was used by a nun in Rutshuru to describe the current state of education in much of Eastern Congo. Protracted fighting and displacement has prevented an entire generation of children from accessing even the most fundamental education. Because much of the violence in Eastern DRC has been focused on civilians, she proposes preventing access to education is often an intentional act by armed groups.

Hier ein paar Updates zu unserer Nominierung für das “Environmental Filmfestival Accra” mit unserem Film “Save Our Children”.

Wie gesagt sind wir nominiert und da jetzt auch die Leiterin des Festivals auf unsere Arbeit und Filmprojekte aufmerksam geworden ist und diese schon sehr lobt, sehen auch die Chancen für weitere Erfolge sehr gut aus. Mittlerweile ist die Filmauswertung abgeschlossen und “Save Our Children” hat, laut des Festivalmanagements “eine der besten Spielzeiten die es gibt”, nämlich den einzigen Samstag.

Ich hatte ja gesagt, das es sehr schön (und für mich das wichtigste) wäre, wenn es die Jugendlichen nach Accra schaffen würden um dort ihren Film im Kino zu sehen und geehrt zu werden. Dank der super netten und spontanen Spende von Ralph und Birgit Elsaesser, ist es jetzt möglich, mit dem Filmteam (also den Jugendlichen) zu dem Scrrening zu fahren.
Es wird ein unvergässliches Erlebniss für alle, da manche der Jugendlichen aus Komenda noch nie in Accra oder im Kino waren.

Es kommen auch noch der neuen Filmworkshop-Lehrer Philipp Brandstädter, sowie Projektmanager Solomon und Leiter von AIM. Ghana Jörn mit. Dazu kommt noch, dass AIM und alle eben genannten extra noch zur Eröffnung des Festivals eingeladen wurden. Ich bin so gespannt zu hören, was gerade vor sich geht, denn es sind nur noch wenige Tage bis zur Show. Ich glaube es wird ein Riesen-Spektakel, denn schon auf der Pressekonferenz waren schon sehr viele bemerkenswerte Persönlichkeiten erschienen wie z.B.

PRESS CONFERENCE TO ANNOUNCE THE 7TH EDITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL OF ACCRA.
Environmental Film Festival of Accra (EFFA) started 7 years ago as a small gathering of film enthusiasts and environmentalists. It is now Accra’s environmental event of the year and Ghana’s fastest growing film festival, attracting over 10,000 people last year. The press conference will announce the 7th edition of EFFA scheduled for Thursday 9 June 2011, with details of the festival programme, special events and features, including:

1. Preview of films from Ghana and around the world
2. First Environmental Film competition
3. State of the Environment Forum
4. Waste Conference
5. Recycled clothes show
6. Open air cinema
7. Young Film Makers Workshop and
8. Special screenings for schools and young people
The press conference will also announce the partners and collaborators for the 7th edition, the biggest, so far. More details on EFFA can be found at www.effaccra.org

Ghanas Environmental Filmfestival…

.. hat mir gerade ein Zusage gesendet, dass unser Film “Save Our Children“  für das diesjährige Filmfestival in Accra ausgewählt wurde!

Das EFFA ist eines der größten Filmfestivals in Ghana und wir von sehr vielen Organisationen und Institutionen unterstützt:

Zu dieser Nominierung gibt es noch eine kleine Geschichte, die ich an dieser Stelle erzählen will.
Meine Schüler, AIM  und ich hatten uns schon 2010 für EFFA mit “Save Our Children” beworben..leider hatten wir von EFFA erst 5 Tage nach dem Abgabetermin erfahren und so kam es, dass unser Film nicht einmal angeguckt wurde.
Jetzt habe ich 360 Tage gewartet und mit der Hilfe von AIM Komenda es geschafft den Film noch einmal pünktlich an zu melden. …und.. es hat geklappt!

Das warten hat sich gelohnt.
Endlich werden die Jugendlichen auch in Ghana für ihre Arbeit gelobt!!

Was hat “Save Our Children” eigentlich noch bewirkt? Was kann man mit einem einzigen 15 Minuten Film über die Wünsch und Visionen von jugendlichen aus Komenda im Bezug auf die Umweltverschmutzung vor Ort und international alles erreichen?
Ich bin selber immer wieder erstaunt wie viel Power hinter so einem kleine Projekt steht. Einer der größten Erfolge, von dem ich auch hier auf den Blog berichtet habe war, dass sich die Dorfbewohner in Komenda (zumindest ein Teil) Gedanken über den Strand gemacht – und ihn gesäubert haben. Das war mir am wichtigesten, denn Ziel des Filmworkshops ist es in Komenda bzw. Ghana nachhaltig etwas zu verändern. Das schaffen wir jetzt eventuell auch wieder mal dank EFFA.
Die vorher-nachher Bilder von dem ersten Erfolg in Komenda könnt ihr ein paar Einträge vorher unter dem Titel “Der Erfolg von Save Our Children” sehen!

Eine weiter Story, die ich bis jetzt noch nicht erwähnt habe, war die Reise nach Peru, da “Save Our Children” auf einer Konferenz von Galli, gefördert durch die Europäische Union, vorgestellt wurde. Das ganze war während meinem Jahr in Ghana passiert.
Ich denke das ist einen extra Eintrag wert, den ich bald noch einmal schreiben werde. Gerade passiert schon wieder so viel Neues….
Bleibt dran! Es sieht so aus als ob Ghana schon sehr bald wieder in den Mittelpunkt meines Lebens rückt.

Stirbt Rassismus im Krieg? Mögen jetzt alle Ouattara? Werden die Menschen, die lange von Gbagbo-Anhängern unterdrückt wurden ihre Macht im Sinne der Versöhnung nutzen? Werden im blutig erkämpften “Frieden” keine Menschenrechte mehr verletzt? War die Berichterstattung objektiv genug um uns ein klares Bild der Realität zu liefern? Sind die damals als Rebellen bezeichneten Kämpfer, die nun zur neuen staatlichen Streitkraft ernannt wurden, automatisch friedlich und gut? Sind alle die für Gbagbo waren automatisch böse? Ist Ouattara ein guter Mensch? Wird Côte d’Ivoire jetzt nicht mehr aus dem Blickfeld der Medien verschwinden? Wird der Kakaohandel jetzt fair? Wird man aus diesem Krieg und sinnlosen Blutvergießen lernen?

… ich glaube nicht!

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

Ich habe in den letzten Stunden verschiedene Videos analysiert, die seit November 2010 bis heute über die Wahlen, Konflikte, den Bürgerkrieg, den “Freiheitskampf”, den “Frieden” und neuen Kämpfen, aus verschiedenen Sichten der Gbagbo, Ouattara und UN/westliche Länder/Medien, berichten. Es war interessant!

Hier sieht man z.B. noch wie die Gbagbo-Anhänger gefeiert haben…wo sind sie jetzt alle hin?

Man kann sehr viel, jede Wendung in der jungen Geschichte, der Weg in den Krieg und der vermeintliche Frieden, anhand der Videos gut verfolgen..nur weiß man am Ende doch nicht was wahr ist.
Trotzdem muss ich sagen, dass ich über sehr viele der Videos dankbar bin und auch wenn die schlimmsten Verbrechen nie ans Licht der Öffentlichkeit gelangen werden, trotzdem war es möglich wenigstens ein paar Impressionen filmisch fest zu halten. Überwiegend haben hier Handys mit integrierten Kameras einen sehr verblüffenden Job geleistet.

Aber es geht weiter..
Nach dem die Kämpfe vorbei sind, habe ich gerade in einem Bericht gelesen, dass es schon den ersten (oder mehr?) Putschversuch gab.
Da sieht man wieder wie Medien beeinflussen und ich sofort voreingenommen war bis ich realisieren konnte, dass es Vergangenheit anstatt Realität ist, die ich da lese.
Es ist ein sehr extremer Prozess, den man anhand der Videos durch macht. Ganz verscheiden Gefühle kommen in einem hoch und man kann, da dieser Krieg so kurz war, die verschiedenen Entwicklungen/Stufen sehr gut erkennen.

Es war ein etwas älterer Artikel vom 21. April, in dem Bericht wird gesagt, das ein neuer Kampf um die Macht aufgeflammt ist. Ich bin geschockt, google den Namen des Putsch-Anführers und sehe..
